On a sunny Saturday not so long ago I went on my first university sanctioned, lecture related field trip to some lovely archeological sites in South East Scotlnad.

SITE ONE: At the end of rather narrow lane which the bus driver took with alarming speed. At the top of a blustery hill. Castlelaw, the site of many a settlement.

On one side of the site was farmland chock full o’ sheep. On the other side, a military shooting range with loud red flags warning us of imminent danger.

Yonder lies a loch. What ho!

Thar she is, Iron Age Hillfort complete  with sheep poo a go go. Just look at those earthwork ramparts. I pine, I perish…..
